Charlotte Douglas International Airport West Ramp Lavatory/Ground Support Equipment Area Sewers

To eliminate the need for waste carts to drive to a mid-field dumping area across taxiways at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, STV designed new 8-inch sewers for a new lavatory/ground support equipment area at the airport’s West Ramp. The sewers will accept waste from aircraft, which will then flow through a triturator and into Charlotte Water’s sewer system. In addition, STV designed water service lines to the lavatory facility and a new guard shack at the redesigned West Ramp gate. .

To accommodate additional aircraft parking, approximately 180 linear feet of existing sewer in Rental Car Road was replaced at a flatter slope. This required the design of a temporary traffic shift for the roadway that must remain open 24/7 for terminal access.

The project was part of Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s $2.5-$3.1 billion capital investment program.
