To provide needed service to the town of Windsor in Sonoma County, CA, the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) is undergoing a program to extend its rail line 3.5 miles north, from Airport Boulevard in Santa Rosa to Windsor River Road in Windsor, CA.  STV is an engineering and architectural design subconsultant to lead contractor Stacy and Witbeck for this extension, which is under a design-build contract. The project includes replacement of existing track, reconstruction of five at-grade crossings, construction of a three-mile pedestrian and bicycle path, and removal of five wooden bridges to be replaced with concrete bridges.

The firm’s designs will be coordinated with a traffic roundabout that is also underway in the town of Windsor. The roundabout’s traffic will travel through the SMART rail crossing once complete. STV has been developing the SMART system in California’s North Bay Area since its inception, as lead designer on the initial operating segment, and the first extension south to Larkspur Ferry Terminal.
