Walt Whitman Bridge PA Corridor Rehabilitation

STV is providing on-site construction monitoring and inspection services to the Delaware River Port Authority for reconstruction of the 2.5-mile stretch of the Walt Whitman Bridge approach roadway in Philadelphia, PA. The Walt Whitman Bridge is a seven-lane suspension bridge spanning the Delaware River and carries more than 120,000 motorists every day between Philadelphia and Camden County, NJ.

For this rehabilitation effort, the construction monitoring team is focusing on the segment of the approach running from Passyunk Avenue in Philadelphia to the toll plaza located on the west side of the Walt Whitman Bridge. The project scope includes roadway reconstruction and improvements to multiple bridge decks. The project also calls for the removal and replacement of overhead signal gantries and more than three miles of new guide rail as well as extensive maintenance and protection of traffic; among other associated work.

In addition to the heavy commuter traffic during the week, this section of roadway experiences peak seasonal traffic flow on weekends due to motorists travelling to and from the New Jersey shore areas.  This corridor also sees high traffic demands associated with events at the stadium and other entertainment venues in Philadelphia. As a result, construction work is being staged to accommodate the various traffic demands. Close coordination with the City of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and other key stakeholders is an important element of the project’s execution.
