Northgate Link and East Link Extensions

As Sound Transit continues its unparalleled expansion to meet the needs of an exponentially growing commuter population in the Puget Sound region, STV’s team is anticipating the debut of the East Link (2 Line) Extension, a transformative addition that brings light rail to Seattle’s East Side for the very first time.

STV, in joint venture with Mott MacDonald as Northwest Transit Systems Partners, has overseen the systems construction of several ambitious expansion projects on behalf of Sound Transit for more than seven years. For the 14-mile East Link Extension, which will connect Seattle, Mercer Island, Bellevue and Redmond, the joint venture has provided technical review and construction management services for traction power, communications, signaling and train control systems. All of these elements contribute to the efficient operation of trains as well as help create a safe and reliable experience for commuters.

Downtown Bellevue Tunnel construction

The upcoming 2 Line opening introduces eight of the East Link’s 10 new stations, linking South Bellevue Station through downtown Bellevue and the Bel-Red area to Redmond Technology Station near Microsoft’s corporate headquarters. This marks a monumental occasion for Seattle’s East Side communities, enhancing connectivity and reducing travel time. Trains commenced running this line just last week, and the official opening is scheduled for this spring.

With two stations of the East Link Extension still under construction, which will connect South Bellevue to Mercer Island and across I-90 to Judkins Park and Downtown Seattle, STV will remain actively engaged in shaping the future of this transformative project. Upon completion of this final segment, the fully realized East Link will span an impressive 14-mile stretch and stand as the world’s only passenger light rail service operating over a floating bridge within the I-90 section linking Mercer Island and Seattle across Lake Washington.

Additionally, STV’s commitment to Sound Transit and to shaping the future of transit in the Seattle metropolitan area extends beyond the East Link project. Our joint venture, also responsible for the Northgate Link Extension which opened in 2021, is providing ongoing construction management services for the 8.5-mile Lynnwood Link Extension, connecting Northgate into Snohomish County.
