Rail Vehicle Maintenance Facility Water and Sewer Main Relocation and Replacement

North Carolina’s Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposed construction of a new locomotive and railcar maintenance facility jointly used by NCDOT and Amtrak. To accommodate this new facility a 54-inch diameter prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) water main needed to be relocated with a similarly sized ductile iron pipe (DIP). STV designed the relocation by first reviewing as-built documents from the 1980s and then worked with the original PCCP manufacturer to perform soft digs to determine the exact depth and slope of the existing pipe. The project also included relocations of approximately 2,700 linear feet of sanitary sewer and water main iron piping.

Beside design, STV also performed construction management services for the relocation and replacement of the water and sewer mains. The firm also worked closely with CLTWater and Norfolk Southern Railway to coordinate efforts to temporarily bypass sewer pumping during the construction of trenchless roadway crossings.
