Serving more than 550,000 passengers a day, Pennsylvania Station in Midtown Manhattan is the main commuter rail hub for the surrounding region and destination terminal for NJ TRANSIT, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and Amtrak. STV conducted a comprehensive capacity analysis for the station. The firm’s analysis took into account the infrastructure, operations, and service policies of each railroad, and examined the potential impacts of major capital improvements within the 2017-to-2030 time frame.

Each carrier — as well as Metro-North Railroad — is using the data to create service and fare strategies that reflect current infrastructure capacity and show how that capacity may be increased through improvements. STV developed a computer-simulated rail model study to test operational and structural scenarios that could help in meeting potential service requirements.
