North Station Transportation Improvement Project

North Station’s proximity to the center of the city and public transportation service make it a prime site for development. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) undertook a major improvement project to replace the aging North Station and to improve daily trips for commuters by streamlining intermodal connections.

STV, in joint venture, provided project management; planning; engineering design; construction-phase services; and environmental permitting for the $250 million project to transform North Station in a multimodal hub. The rejuvenation of this major transportation complex included design of major improvements to the terminal complex and incorporation of TD Garden; a two-level, below-grade Green Line Station; construction of a 1,200 car, five-level underground parking structure; and the relocation of the elevated Green Line Trolley to a tunnel adjacent to the Orange Line Rapid Transit Tunnel. The result was a “superstation” for rapid transit, trolley, and commuter rail.
