The expansion of Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) existing storage yard in Ronkonkoma is a key part of the LIRR's larger efforts to increase and provide more reliable and efficient commuter rail service into Manhattan. STV designed the the original yard and was selected by LIRR to provide preliminary design for track, signal and traction power modifications needed for an 11-track expansion of the facility, so that it connects to the existing LIRR main line and associated wash/lead tracks. STV is also preparing 30-percent design documents to be used during the design-build procurement process, as well as performing an environmental assessment for the expanded Mid-Suffolk Yard. 

The LIRR and its parent agency, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, are upgrading many of their key storage and maintenance facilities in concert with East Side Access, a $10 billion project to extend LIRR service to Grand Central Terminal on the East Side of Manhattan. STV, in joint venture, is providing engineering design and construction phase services in support of East Side Access.
