For many years, STV has assisted the New York State Office of General Services (NYSOGS) in addressing various improvements and changes to the Manhattan Psychiatric Center on Wards Island. For one of these initiatives, STV developed engineering plans for renovating the A side of the Dunlap Building into the new Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center. This center was designed to improve patient services while addressing the need for more space and an updated facility to meet current building code standards.

The engineering plans were tailored to accommodate the needs of high-security patients and clientele, and also provided additional space and security for administrators. Under STV’s guidance, the complex gut renovation of all 17 floors was completed while patients and administrators continued to function within the occupied B side of the building. The renovated facility now houses 225 patients and includes a glass observation station for staff. The project’s structural upgrades resulted in more usable space, updated air handling units, and the removal of hazardous materials.
