The Iowa Department of Corrections asked STV to develop a 21st-century facility that would integrate gender-, health- and age-responsive programming into the fabric of design for the expansion of the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women. The project comprised the renovation of five buildings and the construction of six new ones, along with various site improvements. The 888-bed facility includes medium/minimum as well as maximum security housing.

The facility efficiently integrates mental health treatment, medical care, substance abuse programs, assisted living, transitional programming, and correctional industries. The buildings that support academic and vocational education are located at the heart of the campus. STV’s design incorporated numerous sustainable building measures, such as the geothermal heating and cooling system.
