The Burlington Road at Bolcum Road intersection in Campton Hills, Illinois, serves more than 17,000 vehicles each day, including commercial traffic traveling to and from Illinois Route 64. The former three‑legged “T” intersection relied on a single stop sign, creating backups on Bolcum Road and making left turns onto Burlington Road difficult and unsafe. To enhance traffic flow and improve safety, the Kane County Department of Transportation advanced a reconstruction project to convert the intersection into a modern roundabout. STV provided construction inspection services to support the delivery of this key safety improvement.
What challenges did STV address?
The project required full reconstruction within a tight footprint and an aggressive five‑month schedule. Maintaining traffic flow during construction was essential, especially for commercial vehicles. The team also needed to incorporate new drainage, sidewalks, pavement markings, lighting and landscaping into a limited project area. Balancing construction access while minimizing community disruption added further complexity.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV deployed innovative traffic control strategies, including reusing portions of existing pavement to limit closures and reduce construction time. The team oversaw precise staging to allow traffic to move safely while the roundabout was built. STV provided inspection of drainage installation, sidewalk construction, signage, lighting and the landscaped center circle, which includes a colored concrete mountable apron designed to accommodate large‑vehicle turning paths.
How does this project benefit the community?
The new roundabout improves safety, reduces congestion and provides smoother travel through a critical local intersection. By reducing conflict points and improving traffic flow, the project enhances mobility for residents, businesses and commercial drivers while contributing to a more attractive and functional corridor.
