149 St-Grand Concourse and Tremont Avenue Station Accessibility Improvements

On behalf of Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Construction & Development, STV is providing design services as part of the design-build team led by Tully Construction Co Inc. for accessibility upgrades at two New York City Transit subway stations in the Bronx. These enhancements are part of a larger MTA program to promote accessibility and make its system more compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

Improvements include an elevator connecting the street and lower mezzanine, as well as two elevators connecting the upper platform, lower mezzanine, and lower platform at 149 St-Grand Concourse, which serves the No. 2, 4, and 5 trains. At Tremont Avenue, which serves the B and D Lines, one street-to-mezzanine elevator and two mezzanine-to-platform elevators are being designed. All stairs at both stations are undergoing upgrades to meet current ADA standards.

The design-build team undertook the challenge of developing a plan to reuse the station’s historic headhouse, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, as a new station entry. The team coordinated with New York State’s Historic Preservation Office to perform the necessary restoration services.
