STV was awarded a contract with the California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) to prepare environmental and engineering documents for the Burbank to Los Angeles and Los Angeles to Anaheim project sections. These segments include future high-speed rail stations at Union Station in Los Angeles and the Anaheim Regional Intermodal Transportation Center in Anaheim.

The Authority is planning, designing and building a high-speed rail system that will connect the major population centers of California. Phase 1 will connect San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim through the Central Valley. The system will eventually connect to Sacramento and San Diego through the Inland Empire.

Prior to this award, STV had been under contract with the Authority to perform environmental and engineering work on the 30-mile Los Angeles to Anaheim project section.

The corridor between Burbank and Anaheim is not lengthy in terms of mileage, but it is in one of the densest parts of the state, according to Tyler Bonstead, AICP, planning task manager on the current STV contract with the Authority.

“It’s an incredibly busy and constrained corridor running through the heart of Los Angeles, so it’s important to work closely with the surrounding communities and railroad operators moving forward,” Bonstead said.

This section is the second busiest Amtrak corridor in the county, behind the Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C. and Boston. It is also one of the busiest freight lines in the nation, serving as the main line for the BNSF Railway into the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

STV’s prime subconsultant is J.L. Patterson and Associates, a transportation-engineering firm, which provides engineering design, construction management, and staff augmentation services for public and private sector clientele.

“Both firms have successfully worked together in support of many other passenger rail initiatives in California, including the development of the Metrolink commuter rail system in the early 1990s,” Bonstead said. “We’re honored to have been contracted by the Authority as part of this latest landmark rail initiative in California.”

Founded more than 100 years ago, STV is a leader in providing engineering, planning, architectural, environmental and construction management services for transportation systems, infrastructure, buildings, energy and other facilities. The firm is ranked 39th in Engineering News-Record’s Top 500 Design Firms survey and 9th in its Transportation category.
