South Beach Psychiatric Center, New Residential Building

The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) are developing a new residential building for OMH’s South Beach Psychiatric Center that can withstand the wind damage it sustained during Superstorm Sandy while providing modern patient care.

STV provided architectural and engineering services for the 261-bed project, and improved the flood resilience of the 288-acre campus. The firm designed the residence to provide a more normative living environment that supports the center’s client-centered team approach to patient care. Large, floor-to-ceiling glazing and high ceilings will allow abundant natural light into the treatment areas, lobbies, and public corridors. The design team incorporated interior design features such as a “Main Street” concept. The new residence is designed to be LEED® Silver certified. Located within a marshland rated as FEMA’s highest risk flood zone, the yards and grounds are being raised above the 500-year floodplain.
