The New York City Department of Correction hired STV to design a 500-cell addition to the maximum-security George R. Vierno Center at Rikers Island, an expansion meant to relieve prison overcrowding in the New York City metropolitan area. Comprised of precast concrete modular cells, the $100 million addition was a design-build, fast-track project completed in 582 days — 26 days ahead of schedule.
