EnvironmentalUnited States Military Academy Preparatory School Environmental Work (West Point, NY)
The U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, a design-build project with J. Kokolakis Contracting, Inc., was constructed on the site of an 11-acre decommissioned landfill, motor pool and fueling station with historical environmental contamination. As part of STV’s role as architects and engineers of record, its environmental experts provided engineering design services for closure of the motor pool and fueling station, closure and capping of the landfill, sub slab venting system for new buildings, erosion and sediment control, and storm water management during construction. Deep Dynamic Compaction was utilized to compact and stabilize the landfill portion of the site so a soccer field, landscaped areas, roadways and a parking lot could be built on top of it. A gas-recovery and flare system was installed in the landfill to capture landfill gas. A vapor barrier and integrated sub slab groundwater mitigation and vent system was positioned under each of the three linked buildings that make up the school to vent any escaping methane and other hydrocarbon vapors and control groundwater. The environmental work on the project contributed to its earning LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
