To help stabilize electricity costs on Otis National Guard Air Base, the United States Air Force sought a wind turbine to power pumps used in ground water remediation and supplement existing base energy needs. As part of a design-build team, STV provided design services related to site planning and foundation design for a 1.5-MW Furhländer wind turbine on an 80-meter tower. Originally, the project specified a patented cylindrical foundation for the turbine. After examining site conditions, which allowed for spread footing, STV recommended an alternative less costly gravity-type foundation illustrated in the photographs.
