Bridges | Design and Construction  Repainting of Ben Franklin Bridge (Philadelphia, PA and Camden, NJ)

When the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) decided to repaint the entire Ben Franklin Bridge, the gateway to the heart of historic Philadelphia, a three-coat system was designed to prevent paint break-down and rust formation. The work was divided into five painting phases. STV served as the construction monitor for the fifth and final phase of the painting project, which included grit blasting and painting of the Philadelphia approach to the main span, cable support struts and anchorage interiors. The firm monitored the contractor for contract compliance, inspected the completed work, documented the project, coordinated operations and acted as a liaison to the DRPA. STV’s structural inspectors also checked the blasted steel for cracks and section loss because old paint and rust can hide steel deficiencies during initial inspections. The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule.
