Bridges | Design and ConstructionNeuse River Bridge Replacement (New Bern, NC)
STV/RWA was the lead engineering firm and management consultant to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for Neuse River bridge replacement. The project consisted of a multi-lane, 10,000-foot-long, curved steel plate girder bridge and included a three-level interchange (with eight bridges). The STV/RWA team also conducted design-phase load testing. The bridge replacement was designed to withstand the impact of hurricane-force winds and ship impacts. At the time, it was the largest single transportation public works project ever awarded in the state. Despite four major hurricanes, the bridge was completed three months early and $26 million below estimated cost.
The project won the National Partnership for Highway Quality Award for most outstanding highway bridge in the country in 2001. It was also voted the sixth most significant engineering project in North Carolina’s history by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and won an award for Excellence in Highway Design by the Federal Highway Administration (FWA) in 2002.
