STV performed a cost analysis and feasibility study to determine whether the existing Moses Wheeler Bridge, completed in 1958, should be improved or replaced with a new crossing over the Housatonic River. The firm recommended that the three-lane, multispan link be replaced with a low-maintenance, cutting-edge structure. STV designed a continuous, 14-span structure and provided a dual design to allow the contractor to select either a steel or segmental concrete bridge superstructure. This will allow for the most competitive bidding scenario. With the design of the bridge foundations complete, construction of this first phase began in August 2009. Final plans for the superstructure will be completed and ready for bidding in the summer of 2010 with construction scheduled for 2011.
